Early Academic Achievements

Dr. Gregory Lekovic, the son of an obstetrician-gynecologist and homemaker from the Western suburbs of Chicago, demonstrated an exceptional academic aptitude from an early age. After completing high school in 1988 at sixteen, he embarked on his educational journey at the prestigious University of Chicago. In 1993, he graduated with honors, majoring in biology, setting the stage for an illustrious medical career.

Educational Credentials:

  • 1993 AB, University of Chicago
  • 2001 MD, PhD, University of Illinois at Chicago
  • 2001 JD, Chicago-Kent College of Law
  • 2002 Internship, Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency Program
  • 2004 Fellowship in Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Barrow Neurological Institute
  • 2006 Fellowship in Complex Spine Surgery, Barrow Neurological Institute
  • 2007 Fellowship in Skull Base/ Cerebrovascular Surgery, Barrow Neurological Institute
  • 2008 Neurosurgery Residency, Barrow Neurological Institute

Interdisciplinary Excellence

Dr. Lekovic enrolled in the Medical Scholars Training Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago and pursued an MD and a PhD. In 1999, he successfully defended his PhD thesis in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, delving into the olivo-cochlear pathway. He developed a groundbreaking experimental model of the efferent pathway in the turtle’s cochlea analogue, the basilar papilla.

Employing whole-cell patch-clamp recordings, he characterized the efferent synapse, revealing interesting permeability for a cholinergic receptor akin to an alpha-9 cholinergic receptor. This ignited his passion for hearing research and neuroscience. He also learned about the House Clinic and its groundbreaking clinical research and became familiar with confocal microscopy and other advanced optical imaging technologies.

After his formal education in 2001, while in the MSTP program, he enrolled in law school at the Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 2001. He also completed an internship in general surgery in Phoenix, Arizona, from 2001-2002, following which he embarked on his neurosurgical career.

Neurosurgical Training & Advancement

Dr. Lekovic’s neurosurgical career started at the renowned Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, where he trained under the mentorship of two esteemed figures in neurosurgery, Drs. Volker Sonntag and Robert F. Spetzler. BNI, considered the epicenter of skull base and cerebrovascular surgery, offered him the opportunity to further specialize in his chosen field.

During his time at BNI, Dr. Lekovic pursued additional fellowships that shaped his expertise and solidified his reputation as a leading neurosurgeon. These fellowships included Skull Base and Cerebrovascular Surgery with Dr. Spetzler, Complex Spine Surgery with Dr. Sonntag, and Radiosurgery with Dr. Kris Smith.

In 2008, he completed his neurosurgery residency at BNI, culminating in his extensive educational career. This laid the foundation for his subsequent role as a distinguished neurosurgeon and academic leader. Following his residency, Dr. Lekovic joined the House Clinic in Los Angeles, where he has continued to excel in providing exceptional neurosurgical care.
